Farfugium japonica gigantea

£24.50

A clump-forming, evergreen perennial to 60cm tall, prized for its glossy foliage. The dark green, kidney-shaped leaves are held on long stalks and can reach more than 30cm across. Yellow, daisy-like flowers are produced in loose clusters in late summer. The leaves are thick and leathery and produced in great abundance – providing there is enough water – soon forming a large and impressive clump. Farfugium japonicum  is a tougher plant than it looks and is hardy in a moist sheltered aspect in most parts of the UK. A good thick mulch is a sensible practice even in the warmer, more southerly areas but it will generally take a light to moderate frost particularly if it has some protection from other plants or a nearby wall.It needs a moist humus-rich deeply-dug soil and grows best in a shady spot. Given these condtions it will grow large and will soon become a talking point for your every garden visitor.

FARFUGIUM JAPONICA GIGANTEum

Farfugium japonicum ‘Giganteum’  commonly known as the Giant Leopard plant is a lush large leaved evergreen perennial originating from Japan. With attractive deep green rounded kidney shaped leaves often 30cm or more in diameter growing in neat tight clumps which in late summer are topped with sprays of daisy like orange- yellow flowers there is a lot to like about  Farfugium japonicum ‘Giganteum’. To summarise I’d say Farfugium japonicum ‘Giganteum’ is an adaptable easy to grow plant that does best when given fertile moisture retentive soil where it can cope with full sun through to dappled shade. Similar to its native Japanese habit of growing on the banks of steams and ditches.

Farfugium japonicum ‘Giganteum’ requires minimum maintenance, like most perennials it will benefit from occasional top dressings of fertilizer and an annual mulch of good compost in the Autumn or Winter. Being an evergreen I generally prune in late spring to tidy up Winter damaged leaves. I’d also recommend if you live in colder parts of the U.K a little protection from severe weather such as snow would be beneficial, a straw mulch on top of the leaves to protect the crowns.
