Epimedium ‘Spine Tingler’

£9.50

A hybrid with elongated leaflets whose edges are corrugated and tipped with irregular spines pointing in all directions. As if that wasn’t fascinating enough in itself, the young leaves are an iridescent metallic bronze pink, maturing apple green and evergreen. The flowers are large, 4cm in diameter, with small sepals and curving narrow petals, pale lemon becoming richer coloured at the centre.

Description

An epimedium with attitude, Spine Tingler boasts elongated jagged looking glossy leaves that are tinged with chocolate bronze, especially when young, and dangling clusters of winged starry flowers of clear lemon yellow in spring and early summer. Pretty much evergreen, too, so what’s not to like?  A terrific little groundcover plant which will get on quietly with life without much interference, other than to trim back some of the old foliage in spring.Epimediums are native to regions from the Mediterranean across to East Asia and their natural habitat would be woodland, scrubland and shady, rocky places. They will, however, adapt quite happily to a garden in the UK, as long as you ask them nicely.
