Description

This stunning semi-evergreen perennial adds an architectural flare to any garden. Large, deeply lobed, glossy dark green leaves form impressive clumps, from which tall flowerspikes grow in late spring to early summer. Each one of these is covered in white flowers, each with a purple ‘hood’, creating a dramatic two-tone effect.

Although it will tolerate full sun, Acanthus mollis prefers dappled shade. Plant in large groups under trees, but make sure it has plenty of room to spread. It can only be pollinated by bees so is an excellent addition to a wildlife garden. ‘Acanthus’ derives from the Green ‘akantha’ meaning thorn, whilst ‘mollis’ is Latin for ‘smooth’ H&S 3-6ft
